Life is Grand Under the Sea
by Denise M. Ruggieri

Hey mon, where can you go to find picturesque waters in varying shades of blue from turquoise to Cobalt? Water so warm you'd swear it was bath water? Bodies of water this magnificent can only be found around the Caribbean Island of St. Thomas.

St. Thomas was our honeymoon destination where we stayed for 11 perfect, sunny days. The beautiful bodies of water were one of the main focal points of our vacation. We enjoyed the view from our private villa, high on a hill on a nature preserve at Point Pleasant Resort. As we ate breakfast on our balcony, we admired the blue sea which seemed to stretch on for miles and marveled at the sight of the sea turtles that popped their head up above the water just long enough for us to catch a glimpse.

Coki Beach, one of St. Thomas' most breathtaking beaches, was within walking distance of our resort and proved to be a good source of entertainment during our stay. The sandy white beach was lined with palm trees and vibrantly colored flowers that filled the air with a sweet fragrance.

It was in the water at Coki Beach that I had my first experience snorkeling. I had no idea as I put face in the sparkling blue water dancing with bright sun lit rays, what a spectacular view I was about to see. Right in the very area of shallow water where we had been swimming were scores of beautiful, tropical fish of all shapes and sizes.

Dozens of vibrant yellow Sargeant Major Fish encircled me as I fed them dog biscuits, an apparent delight to the tropical sea life.

As we swam out further into the water, we witnessed an even larger assortment of spectacular sights. Colorful coral was everywhere and seemed to be a great hiding place for an assortment of fish in bright yellow, purple, light and dark blue, dark black with yellow stripes, vibrant orange and rainbow colors.

A starfish caught our attention as he lay still on the ocean's floor. We picked him up and admired him before gently dropping him back into the water where he glided down to the sand, landing upside down. Within seconds, he effortlessly flipped himself back over and lay still once again.

As if that wasn't enough of a sight to see and appreciate, only minutes later we saw a flounder dusting the sand. He practically blended with his environment and if it weren't for his moving eyes, we may never have seen him.

When we got out a little deeper into the water, we found ourselves swimming behind a beautiful, spotted stingray. He gracefully swam slowly around the ocean, resembling a bird flapping its wings. He allowed us to swim with him for quite awhile, playfully swimming in circles. We could almost touch his long tail. Moments later, he shot off, gone from view as quickly as he had come into sight.

A few days later, we decided to embark on a journey to St. John, the smallest of the three United States Virgin Islands. Once there, we headed off in a rented jeep to Trunk Bay to snorkel and spend some time on the beach. Nature was every bit as beautiful there as it was in St. Thomas. One of my favorite sights were of the numerous Pelicans circling overhead. Every so often you would hear a loud "plunk" and see water splashing everywhere. Seconds later, the Pelican would appear above the surface, flapping its long bill which you can only assume was filled with small, helpless fish about to meet their destiny.

There were times on our honeymoon where I felt like a real, live Ariel from the movie "The Little Mermaid." I got to see that life is beautiful and grand "under-the-sea!"
